As always, on May 9, we will get together to remember veterans and survivors of many nations of the former USSR, that went through the Great Patriotic War 1941-1945 (WWII). Last year celebration was unbelievably touching. This year again, we will be a part of the Immortal Regiment global movement.

Co-host: Jewish Family Services of Kansas City

On May 9, the Russian House of Kansas City in partnership with the Jewish Family Services of Kansas City invite you to celebrate Victory Day, commemorating the end of the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945. This holiday is one of the most important days in the history of the multinational communities of the former USSR around the word. During that war, we lost over 28 million people. Every family in the Soviet Union was affected.

Just like last year, this event will be a part of the Immortal Regiment (Бессмертный полк), a movement that unites over 80 countries around the globe to commemorate heroes and veterans of the Great Patriotic War.

Last year, our event was joined by Russian cities of Ulyanovsk and Belgorod. Several TV stations in Russia aired the information about our Immortal Regiment of Greater Kansas City event. You can view this page to learn more: http://www.russianhousekc.org/memorial.html

RUSSIAN SEASONS IN KANSAS CITY Series
MASLENITSA Celebration
Irina's Gourmet Bakery
119th & Quivira, Overland Park, KS

Join us for the traditional Russian celebration to say farewell to winter and welcome spring. Taste Russian pancakes, caviar, piroshki; sing Russian songs, win prizes and more!

Sponsors:
Kansas City RU, Irina's Gourmet Bakery, Park University & European Delights.

What is Maslenitsa
This is an old Eastern-Slavic celebration.
The tradition of Maslenitsa dates back to pagan times, when Russian folk would bid farewell to winter and welcome spring. As with many ancient holidays, Maslenitsa has a dual ancestry: pagan and Christian. On the pagan side, Maslenitsa was celebrated on the vernal equinox day. It marked the welcoming of spring, and was all about the enlivening of nature and bounty of sunny warmth. On the Christian side, Maslenitsa was the last week before the onset of Lent (fasting which precedes Easter), giving the last chance to bask in worldly delights.
Pancakes
The name of the holiday, Maslenitsa (derived from maslo, which means butter or oil in Russian) owes its existence to the tradition of baking pancakes (or blini , in Russian). They are essential to the celebration of Maslenitsa. On the one hand, hot, round, and golden, pancakes, as people believed, embody a little of the sun’s grace and might, helping to warm up the frozen earth. In old days pancakes were cooked from buckwheat flour, lending them a red color, making the significance even more evident.

Event Activities:
Every hour, at 12, 1, 2 and 3 PM, we will have a 15-minute presentation about Maslenitsa and performance of Russian songs.
Offers:
Russian pancakes, tea and coffee; Russian crafts, prizes and more.
Mission of the Event:
Promote our cultural heritage and educate the KC community about Russian traditions and holidays.
Goal of the event:
This is a fundraising event and all the proceeds will go to support Russian Cultural Association “Russian House of Kansas City”.  Donations are appreciated.
Business members of the Russian House of Kansas City will have a chance to promote their services by presenting business cards and marketing materials.
Volunteer opportunity is available.
